Presence, humility and relational safety

Presence, humility and relational safety

I know people want data and evidence but in the world of therapy it isn’t quite so easy to obtain as digital or financial analytics. Yes, we do assessments before and after therapy but they don’t tell the whole story…

This week I had three clients share with me the impact therapy had on them

(For obvious confidentiality reasons I’ve modified these stories a little but they are real)

After three sessions, a client reported they had overcome their severe anxiety, rumination, negative self-talk and sleeplessness. They are in a much better place and are now tackling their career, home and relationship goals with confidence.

Another client shared that after a fourth session their health anxiety - that had been seriously limiting their physical and emotional life - completely lifted. They felt peace again for the first time in almost a decade.

I received a message from a client I’d worked with for several months on severe workplace stress. We completed therapy three months ago. They told me they had just passed their probation at a new job with flying colours and were so much more happy and confident that their career is flying again.

Data is important. Impact more so. But people matter too.

I feel so incredibly privileged to have been a small part of their journey.

Kim upholds the principles of client autonomy through collaborative goal-setting and regular review. She avoids directive stances unless psychoeducational content is clinically-justified and well-received, and even then, she checks in with clients to ensure the pace and content of work is appropriate.

Kim demonstrates a high level of skill and emotional intelligence when navigating the complex dynamics inherent in therapeutic relationships. She consistently shows advanced relational competence in navigating the subtleties of therapeutic alliance, rupture and repair – particularly with clients presenting complex trauma, attachment injuries and interpersonal challenges. She demonstrates a reflective, respectful and evolving approach to diversity and inclusion. And she is aware of achievement pressure and cultural scripts in high-performing clients.

Kim’s integration of theory and technique is not only well-informed but also responsive, creative and ethical. Her capacity for metacognition (thinking about her thinking) is strong and allows her to offer her clients not only interventions but presence, humility and a grounded sense of relational safety.

Kim as a therapist

Kim is warm, open and insightful with her clients. Allowing them plenty of space to share their story and encourage exploration and creative ways of thinking about difficult impasses.

She is self-aware, insightful and well able to reflect on herself and her clients.

Kim is gentle at bringing her clients to focus on the matters that are concerning them. She works well with clients of different cultures, backgrounds, sexual orientations and also those who are neurodiverse.

She is aware of her role in client sessions and sticks to her therapeutic work appropriately. She is diligent and maintains boundaries. Her clients feel respected, listened to and well contained.

She is focussed on her clients’ material, helping them to explore the topics they raise in sessions.

It's impressive to see that Kim understands the theory and practice of therapy. She is curious about her work and constantly striving to learn more. Kim is an excellent therapist.  Those seeking therapy with Kim will truly benefit from her clear thinking, diligence and professionalism.
